A Chance Encounter with... Venice!

From Rome, we hopped on a train at Termini Station to Venice. While we weren't sure we'd have the time in Italy to make it to the sinking city, just a few days before, we worked out that we could squeeze in an afternoon in the famous city known for its canals and romantic gondola rides. We arrived in the coastal region of Venezia around lunch time, quickly grabbed some pasta, dropped our stuff off in our flat for the night and hopped onto a train once again to make the 10 minute ride to the island.

We hopped off the train and were immediately surrounded by the beauty of the floating city. Venice is absolutely breathtaking. There wasn't much that we wanted to do other than take a water taxi and wander the streets, so we set off to do just that.

We went from bridge to bridge and street to street. We passed countless couples on gondola rides, beautiful buildings, and several gelato shops. I’m sure you can imagine that I didn’t wait long before grabbing a cup as an afternoon snack. We made our way to the Rialto bridge so that we could cross the grand canal.

Traveling on a budget meant there was no way we wanted to spend 80 euro for our boat ride in the city. We chose to experience the true Venetian water taxi instead. Together, we paid 8 euro to ride across the canal and back to get our boat ride fix. It was the perfect choice as it started to rain shortly after.

We continued wandering through the passages and over the bridges until we made our way to St. Mark's Square. This is where most of Venice’s famous landmarks reside, including the oldest digital clock which changes every 5 minutes. Here, we walked through the beautiful glass shops, people watched at the many restaurants in the square, and took in the beautiful views at the edge of the coast. We were sure to stop and see the original bridge of sighs where prisoners would walk to receive their sentencing, pausing to sigh as they looked at Venice’s beauty one last time.

Before long, we knew we would be the ones sighing if we didn’t get food soon! We set across the city to go to OKE pizzeria. This fun and trendy spot is a must visit if you’re in Venice. After dinner, we grabbed one more cone of gelato and went back to the train station, pausing to take in Venice’s beauty in the moon light a few times along the way.

Doing a half day in Venice was perfect. We were able to see all we wanted to see and move on to the next quickly. Florence, here we come!

Lots of love,

Shelly
